Here is the drum body lovingly made by Janusz a carpenter friend of mine. I normally carve the drum out of a log but due to time restrictions decided to use a technique i used in the making of some drums for the Siera Leone Blind School Choir... I'm not a great carpenter so I gave Janusz instructions on how to make this drum based on the African Ashiko ... a simple shape but lots of angles to consider!
So this drum body is made from local oak here in Forres North East Scotland ... Now my drum making skills shall turn this fancy wooden cone into a drum.... The Herbert pig skin is dried out and ready to be put on. I need to get some metal hoops made and buy some high tension rope as i will use the method of tuning seen on the West African djembe.
The above image is of the metal hoops, in this case stainless steel which will be used to hold the pig skin in place and weave the rope around.
The rope will also tension the drum.
